New York State Stem Cell Science

works to further the agenda of the Empire State Stem Cell Board, whose mission is to foster a strong stem cell research community in New York State and to accelerate the growth of scientific knowledge about stem cell biology and the development of therapies and diagnostic methods under the highest ethical, scientific, and medical standards for the purpose of alleviating disease and improving human health.

The Board, composed of a Funding Committee and an Ethics Committee, identified in its Strategic Plan the following framework for the state's investment in stem cell research:

  • research
  • scientific training
  • infrastructure development
  • ethical, legal and social issues and education
  • administration

Public Health Law Article 2, Title 5A in April 2007 created the ESSC Board within the Department of Health for the purpose of administering grants for basic, applied, translational or other research and development activities that will advance scientific discoveries in fields related to stem cell biology.
