For more than 10 years Dr. Hansis investigated the molecular mechanisms defining totipotency, cell differentiation and reprogramming in humans. Based on this experience, his lab now studies human stem cells and their potential application for therapeutic purposes. The establishment of new efficient protocols for derivation of novel human embryonic stem cell lines, as well as the generation of new disease models based on mutation-carrying human embryonic stem cells, promises to advance the study of diseases and the development of new treatment options. Furthermore, investigation into reprogramming mechanisms for stem cells from human cord blood could lead to the derivation of the full equivalent of embryonic stem cells from non-embryonic sources.
