NYSTEM’s 9th Annual Meeting was held May 11th and 12th at the Rockefeller University in New York City. Nearly 150 participants joined the conference to hear research updates from some of New York's top stem cell scientists.
This year's conference featured an engaging and provocative keynote address by Austin Smith of the University of Cambridge on principles of pluripotency, as well as a panel discussion on reproducibility in science and what journals and journal editors are doing to improve the current system of scientific publication.
In a change from past conferences, the Program Committee mixed different research foci within each session, rather than devoting sessions to specific research areas, making for lively discussion. Also new this year were poster teasers, six 2-3 minute overviews of selected posters presented during plenary sessions. The meeting culminated with a call to action to engage the public and elected officials, and the awarding of poster prizes.
Two scientists from the Rockefeller University, Albert Ruzo and Gist Croft, shared the first place prize. Second place went to Brandon Guenthart of Columbia University, and third place went to Arezoo Momeni of the University at Buffalo. Honorable mention was given to all the Shared Facilities poster presenters.
