NYSTEM 2013: COLLABORATION & RENEWAL
May 22 & 23
The CUNY Graduate Center
365 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY
NYSTEM’s 5th Annual Meeting was a one and one-half day event that featured many of New York's leading stem cell researchers. New York State Health Commissioner and Chair of the Empire State Stem Cell Board, Nirav Shah, MD, MPH, gave introductory remarks in which he reiterated the State's commitment to supporting stem cell research and to building its stem cell community. He then introduced the keynote speaker, Clive Svendsen, Director of the Regenerative Medicine Institute at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Svendsen described the twists and turns of a decade of work which culminated in a CIRM award to conduct an 18 Patient Phase I/II trial targeting ALS. He then joined Sally Temple and Steve Goldman for a panel discussion moderated by Lorenz Studer, on moving potential stem cell therapies to clinical trials. Studer, Temple and Goldman are the first round recipients of NYSTEM's much anticipated Consortium awards, aimed at treating Parkinson's Disease, Age-related Macular Degeneration, and Multiple Sclerosis, respectively.
NYSTEM 2013 plenary sessions included: Single Cell Analyses, Stem Cells in Cancer, Stem Cell Biology, and NYSTEM Success Stories. Over 50 abstracts were presented in two poster sessions.
